30.01.12CAPY JAM 2 – THE GAMES!
We spent the final moments of 2011 game jamming our hearts out. Here, at long last, are the awesome results of Capy Jam 2!
Descriptions by the game makers! Enjoy!
THE FINAL ACT
TEAM: Vic Nguyen – Hubert Wong
You are trying to save the princess by beating your rival in combat — but there is a twist. This game revolves around acting. In essence, the player plays the role of an actor who is playing the role of someone who is trying to save the princess. Gameplay revolves around how well the player plays his role as an actor in the play.
TEAM: Kenneth Yeung – Kelly Smith
It is the height of World War II and Europe is on the verge of collapse. The evil mastermind Adolf Hamster has created mind-controlling war machines, turning all the animals of the forest into soldiers of his twisted army. You are Captain Ferris, the last remaining ferret free from Adolf Hamster’s clutches. You must pilot your Ferret Flier and destroy his evil machines. It’s time to free your animal friends, enlist their help and lead them in a fight to take back the animal kingdom!
FART N’ BURP
TEAM: Drew Grainge – Qiqo – Matt Repetski – Sean Lohrisch
Fart N Burp is the first game to tackle to increasingly important issue of flatulence and its role within the cultural systems of psychedelic intergalactic worlds of tomorrow. An ambitious project to say the least, and one which we expect will likely be cherished by fart enthusiasts for generations, it is in fact still but an infant. Certainly Fart-Flying through beautiful landscapes to the smooth stylings of the Glenn Miller Orchestra is a euphoric and mesmerizing enough experience that it may cause one to wonder “What else could I possibly want out of life?” but the truth is, time limitations required us to cut planned features such as Accu-Fart Technology and “Farticles,” and the result is a game which, I believe, asks fewer questions about the nature of male-female relationships than we initially set out to. Sure it sounds simple on paper; fart to propel yourself over obstacles, burp to shoot downward and avoid oncoming space poo, gobble up delicious floating junk food and laxatives and try not to fart on any of the Venus Clamshell Ladies as you pass them by…. but paper is an old man’s game.
TEAM: Sylvain Coutouly – Jon Maur – Sean Lohrisch
Jetman was a character wrongfully cut from a different Capy project so we wanted to give him his own game. Somehow that turned into a kind of touch screen Panzer Dragoon/Defender hybrid with Fruit Ninja influences. The basic idea is Yellow Laser kills, Blue Laser saves. You should only kill the alien ships, and save the civilians. Unfortunately we didn’t get all the extra gameplay elements like combos done in time, but what did make it in was already quite fun. We used the engine from Sworcery and only had to write new Lua and Xml scripts.
TEAM: Colin Weick – Anthony Chan
Lead-mming is a puzzle game intending to combine elements of Lemmings, Pipe Dream, and other games. The player’s goal is to create a path for the lead-mming, by shuffling the panel layout of each level. We had a lot of different variations and different mechanics for this concept, such as black and white inversion, sliding rows and columns, panel orientation locking on/off…etc. In the end we chose to do it with just the one simple mechanic of shuffling the panels by rotation.
ALONE ON THE MOON
TEAM: Tri Vuong – Christian Meyer – Frankie Leung
Frankie: “You know, it’s about a man. Alone on the moon. Fighting against aliens who want to destroy democracy. The sequel to the 2010 critically acclaimed game.”
Tri: “I guess we were trying to make a turn based tactics game where you had team members with different specialties. Unfortunately due to time restraints, we had to scale that all back and only had one astronaut.”
Christian: “We all had different thoughts about what this game would and could be.”
TEAM: Mike Nguyen – Bryan McConkey – Kris Piotrowski
Champ Bro is the most challenging game ever made. Not because it is difficult, but because it is true. It’s about life, death, sex, booze, death, hitting dingers, eating steaks, death, booze and death. It’s about dancing on a knife edge, millimeters from sweet, sweet oblivion. Also, Rock and Roll.
Looks like we had a some fun, don’t it?!? If you’re interested in more photos from the jam, check out our Flickr feed!
